It was a good thing my first K'nex kit only came with a few hundred parts.
I would've quickly run out of real estate had I not been forced to dismantle each model before eagerly assembling the next. But less fortunately, my kit came with a motor and a set of wheels. Add string and tape to the mix, and my room soon became an obstacle course that shut its own door and turned off the lights – with me inside.
Now, 14 years later with digital design and plenty of hard drive space, my experiments can be a little less hazardous. But I'm just as eager to kiss right up against the constraints of what I have available, be it via manually flying a camera down a rope or hacking a servo to take the place of a missing motor.
